From BALI: Ijen Sunrise Tour, drop-off BALI

1 day

Easy

Embark on a midnight quest from Bali to Mount Ijen, crossing seas and scaling volcanic slopes to witness the mystical Blue Fire and sunrise over a turquoise crater lake - or choose a 2-day adventure for extra comfort on your epic journey.

Prepare for the adventure of a lifetime. Your unforgettable Mount Ijen journey begins as the sun starts to dip, with a convenient 5:00 PM pickup right from your Bali hotel. Sit back and relax as we whisk you away on a scenic evening drive to Bali's western edge. At the harbor, you will board a midnight passenger ferry, feeling the cool ocean breeze as you cross the strait into East Java—leaving the standard tourist trail behind for something truly extraordinary. Once in Java, your driver will navigate the quiet, misty mountain roads, bringing you directly to the base camp to begin your ascent.

Under a canopy of brilliant stars, your midnight trek begins. Guided by the crisp mountain air and the thrill of discovery, you will hike up the volcano's slopes toward the crater rim. The real magic happens as you don your gas mask and carefully descend into the heart of the rocky caldera. Here, you will come face-to-face with Ijen's legendary Blue Fire—a breathtaking, rare natural phenomenon where highly pressurized sulfuric gases ignite into dancing, ethereal electric-blue flames against the pitch-black night. It is a mesmerizing, otherworldly sight you can only witness in two places on Earth.

Just as you think the experience cannot get any better, the sky begins to lighten, calling you back to the crater rim for a spectacular grand finale. As the sun rises, it unveils the true crown jewel of the volcano: a colossal, vivid turquoise crater lake framed by dramatic, smoke-wreathed rock formations. It is a surreal, stunningly photogenic landscape that will leave you absolutely speechless. After capturing these dawn views, you will descend the mountain with a profound sense of achievement and begin your relaxing journey back, returning to your Bali hotel by the afternoon with memories that will last a lifetime.

If you want to experience all of this magic but prefer a slightly gentler pace, we highly recommend our fantastic 2 Days / 1 Night (2D1N) alternative. Departing Bali in the afternoon, this option includes a relaxing overnight stay at a comfortable local hotel or homestay in East Java. You will get to sink into a real bed for a few crucial hours of sleep before your midnight trek, and best of all, you will have a cozy room waiting for you afterward. It is the perfect way to conquer the volcano while treating yourself to a hot shower and a hearty breakfast before the journey back to Bali!

      Please note
        • Physical Fitness: The hike to the crater rim takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours and involves a continuous, steep ascent on a dirt path. A moderate to high level of physical fitness is highly recommended to comfortably complete the trek.
        • Health and Safety Restrictions: Due to the physically demanding nature of the hike and the presence of strong, thick sulfur fumes at the crater, this tour is not suitable for pregnant travelers, young children, or individuals with asthma, respiratory issues, or heart conditions.
        • Temperature Changes: While Bali is tropical and warm, the temperature at the summit of Mount Ijen before sunrise can drop significantly (often between 5°C to 10°C / 40°F to 50°F). The wind chill can make it feel even colder.
        • What to Pack: You will need to bring warm layers (a jacket, sweater, and long pants), sturdy closed-toe hiking shoes or sneakers with good grip, a warm hat, and a change of clothes. We will provide the essential safety gear, including gas masks for the sulfur fumes and headlamps for the dark ascent.
        • Travel Dynamics: The continuous 24-hour option involves extensive travel time (roughly 10–12 hours round trip of driving and ferry rides). If you prefer a more rested experience with less continuous travel fatigue, we strongly encourage booking the 2 Days / 1 Night (2D1N) alternative.
        • Local Currency: Bring some Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) in cash for small personal expenses, such as buying snacks, hot tea at the base camp, or tipping local guides and drivers.
        What to bring
          • Original Passport / ID: This is strictly required for the ferry crossing from Bali to East Java. Port authorities will not let you board without original identification.
          • Warm Layers: Do not let tropical Bali fool you! The summit temperature before sunrise drops drastically (often around 5°C - 10°C / 40°F - 50°F). Pack a warm jacket, a fleece or sweater, long pants, a beanie, and gloves.
          • Proper Footwear: Sturdy, closed-toe hiking boots or sneakers with excellent grip. The trail is steep and sections of loose gravel can be slippery, especially during the descent into the crater.
          • A Change of Clothes: You will sweat during the hike, and the sulfur smoke tends to linger on fabrics. Having a fresh, clean set of clothes to change into for the long drive back to Bali will make your return journey infinitely more comfortable.
          • Comfortable Daypack: A small, lightweight backpack to carry your layers, water, and camera so your hands remain completely free for balance during the hike.
          • Camera and Power Bank: You will definitely want to capture the Blue Fire and the turquoise lake. Cold weather drains batteries quickly, so a fully charged power bank is a lifesaver.
          • Local Cash (IDR): Bring small denominations of Indonesian Rupiah for use at the local toilets, buying a hot coffee or tea at the summit, or tipping your hardworking local guides and driver.
          • Personal Medications: Especially any required for travel sickness, as the drive through the mountains and the ferry ride can be bumpy.
